木は朽ちるという美しい可能性を持っています。

それを美しいと感じるのは、われわれ自身も生の盛りを経て、

やがて老いて朽ちていくことを知っているからかもしれません。

緻密な年輪、節や朽ちは、その死んだ木が生き抜いた過去の時間そのものであり、

それは見る人に今ここで生きているという美しい生の瞬間を実感させる力が

あるように思います。

子供の頃に住んでいた家のそばには森があり、

そこでは膨大な数の生死が季節ごとに繰り返されているのを感じながら育ちました。

木は自分の遊び相手であると同時に、樹液には虫が群がり、枝には鳥が巣を作り、

新緑はやがて腐葉土となって森の命を養っていました。

嵐の夜には巨木がゴーゴーと音をたて、布団の中で畏れを抱いた存在でもありました。

わたしにとっての木は、ただの材料としての質量ではなく、

ガサガサした皮や青臭い匂いを持つ、生きものとしての樹のようです。

自分が作るものにもその命の気配や生々しい官能性を映しこめたらと思っています。

Just like the trees they came from, each type of wood has a distinct personality. Each piece differs in color, grain, scent, and weight.

The wood has a particular atmosphere and an intimate texture which only material that once lived has, like leather and cotton and linen.

I always choose my material carefully so as to bring out the best of its charm.

吉川和人

１９７６年生まれ　福島県出身

慶応義塾大学商学部卒業後、株式会社カッシーナ・イクスシーにて勤務。

在職中に一年間の育児休暇を取得と同時に渡仏。

２０１２年に同社を退社し、岐阜県立森林文化アカデミーにて

木工技術の基礎と日本の森林文化を学ぶ。

​

​２０１７年株式会社ウォールデンウッズを設立。

学校法人自由学園女子部の教室家具の製作や

豊岡市立図書館の彫刻家具などのプロジェクトも手掛けつつ、

個展の開催や、個人邸、公共施設、レストランの家具や食器の制作を

メインに現在は東京と三重にて制作活動中。

Kazuto Yoshikawa

Kazuto Yoshikawa is woodworker, living in Tokyo, Originally from Fukushima prefecture.He graduated from Keio university  with a degree in commerce.

After he had worked for the furniture company, Cassina IXC in Japan for 12 years, He learned woodworking skills and studied the traditional Japanese culture of wood  in the school in Gifu prefecture where the most old wood-making industry remains.

Currently He lives and works in Tokyo, making furniture and daily utensils.
